A mostly stock black pearl car with 120K. Third owner. Borla exhaust, '94 E420 wheels, altered rear suspension. 5-speed. Owned since June 1997. Rear fenders a bit of a mess due to time in CT/VT! COMPLETELY redone suspension parts front-and-rear. Rebuilt engine in '97 due to timing chain tensioner failure...

Count me in your 16-valve roll call. I have a 1997 Black Pearl 16 valve with 97K miles. This is now my daily driver as I passed my 1987 Acura Legend Coupe 5-speed to my son. The 16 valve is not as fast as my old Acura but it stops quicker and is much more nimble. In short, it is fun to drive.

It has the Eibach lowering springs and Sach Boge shocks, K&N air filter of course and ATE grooved brake "Power Rotors". My current project for this car is to install a supercharger from a SLK 230 Kompressor. Looks like it will be tight but that it should fit. The car just feels like it just needs more raw power.

Thanks for instructions on how to post pics! We'll see how I do. Here is a pic of my '85 euro with suspension, brakes, wheels, stainless exhaust & K&N provided by Delsing Motorsport. This Euro model came with factory equiped Recaro seats front and back. It is now wearing Italian boots ... Pirelli PZero 225/50ZR15 (treadwear rating is 120).

There is a limit of 51K for attachments. Maybe the file was too large???

Oops. It was there when I posted it. but I see it is gone now. The file was 85k so it exceeded the 51k limit. I'll see if I can downsize the file and try again.

See if this link to Robby's car works. The picture was taken at an autocross sponsored by the Greater Washington Section of MBCA. http://mbca.org/virginia/images/robby19.jpg

This ones got a K&N (wow),

Its future mods. are considerable so I'll state them

welcome, Adam...

Hey Adam-

What do you mean wrong thread? Looks like you're in the right place. Anyway, welcome. It's good to hear from another who's got the bug to modify their 16v.

Where you located? I'm in CT. Feel free to email me to further discuss, etc.

P.S. did you blow up your Euro? What happened?

P.P.S. I'm on my latest exhaust iteration this week (see post about my trials and tribulations of exhaust set up for this car). I went from stock, to no pre-cats / aftermarket cat / no resonator (sounded horrible), to no cats / resonator / muffler (sounded great, but needed to pass emissions this month), to still no pre-cats / factory cat / resonator / muffler (too quiet, no sound), to factory cat / muffler (still sounded pretty bad). So, I welded in a tubular glasspack (you know, the ones that look like the old red cherry bombs). This is aluminized so shouldn't rust off every year. Anyway, so now it's factory cat / glasspack / muffler; it sounds great, not too loud at all. A bit of sputtery blurble spitting upon deceleration, but I can live with that. Thought I'd share my experiences with all (to hopefully save your reputations with your local pipe benders and not have them do so much f'n welding!!!).

No Pre Cat Downpipes??

Hey Paul:

Where did you get the downpipes without the pre-cats?? And is the muffler in your setup a stock MB muffler??

Thanks

Hey Tom-

Good to hear from you. I had my local pipe bender simply cut out the pre cats and weld in straight inserts. Very cheap, very clean, very effective. And the noted power differential is considerable. Of the few things I've done the car so far, that is by far the most significant in terms of power. I do believe Bekkers sells the "euro" pipe conversion, but your looking ~ $175-200.

And, ah, yes... the muffler. Well, if you can sort through my sequence of various set ups, they were all using the factory muffler. The resonator is now the long tube-type glasspack that you can pick up and look straight through like a telescope.

Good luck, have fun!!!

Effect of Precats on Emissions??

Paul:

Don't know what emissions you have in CT; did the removal of precats have significant impact on your emissions? Here in CA they are pretty strict. They only check every two years, so I thought I might get the exhaust modified as you did, but have new downpipes fabricated so I can change back if need be.

By the way, in the MB literature the Pre-Cats are called Primary Cats!

Also: since the precats are upstream of the O2 sensor, did you notice any change in your mixture? I would think that without precats, you exhaust would look much different, and the O2 sensor would indicate either too rich or too lean, don't know which without some thought. If it looked too lean, thats probably OK, since it would then signal the CIS to richen up the mixture--hence giving more HP all things being equal.

Thanks

Tom
