Still looking for more power in my '94... 280hp (corrected) at the wheels ain't enough once you get used to it!

Great to "see" a lot of familiar faces here!

I still have my '92, and it's so addictive that I couldn't resist buying my newest toy last weekend: a 1993 500E. It's in very nice condition and the all the "issues" have already been addressed for a car with this much mileage (163,000).

Repairs done in the time since the odo turned 100,000: Complete valve job, new radiator, water pump, PS/SLS pump, throttle actuator, wiring harness, alternator, front struts & mounts, rebuilt transmission, caps, rotors & wires, master cylinder, etc. (Receipts totaling over $25,000 - OUCH!!!)

Basically, she's ready to roll for a Long Time... just a few little glitches that I'll need to track down & address.

Happy Holidays to everyone!

Just bought a black '04 E500 last week by mistake, details of which I'll go into some other time. Oh, did you mean the ORIGINAL E500E. I had two of those about 3 years ago.

Hey Dave (and Merry Christmas)!

I seem to be inflicted with redundancy-itis. All three of my 124’s are Pearl Black - although the 93 500E has a black interior, and the 92 500E & 95 E300D have gray interiors.

The clear coat on the 92 is getting somewhat worn & foggy, but the 93 & 95 are really nice. I have a two-car garage, and the idea of leaving the 92 outside is disturbing me…

Speaking of power, it seems that the 93 runs out of breath at very high rpm’s, whereas the 92 absolutely LUNGES for the redline. I think my 92 may have an aftermarket chip in it (kickdown shift point is 6200, and no cold upshift delay). I’m sure that the stock 92 LH unit with WOT enrichment helps, but it shouldn’t make this much of a difference.

I’ll be digging into my new toy to see what’s up. Any ideas on what to look at first are MUCH welcomed!

Chips do nothing to improve power - trust me. The 92 WOT enrichment is small enough of a gain that you can NOT tell the difference by the seat of your pants. If the '93 is weak at high RPM, I would check the basics... caps & rotors (at least clean them!), plugs, etc. Also make sure the catalysts are not partially plugged. That will also restrict high-RPM breathing.

BTW - at WOT, mine upshifts at 6400rpm, with either the '92 or '94 LH module. You might want to start a new thread though (and post a link here), also post at the *********.com as well.

Thanks Dave,

Thanks to you, GerryVZ, and numerous others, I realize that the aftermarket chips are a placebo at best. (However, I must tell you that my butt is actually a highly sensitive & calibrated instrument; therefore my seat-of-the-pants diagnostics are fairly credible. )

Interesting to note your upshifts occurs @ 6,400 – small discrepancies between cars could easily be due to minor tachometer errors. Although, with your experience, and all the test & diagnostic goodies you have, I’ll take anything you say to be concrete. (I peeked around at your website the other day. Wow – I wish that you lived nearby, I’d help you recoup your investment by renting your test equipment!)

It’s really a shame about Scott’s website; there was SO MUCH great information available there. I’m not sure if everything is forever lost, or if it can be recovered. Let’s hope that (at least) it can be replicated at Gerry’s new site. I will post over there at *********.com too.

Thank you for your diagnostic suggestions; I’ll start with the basics first, and hopefully it’s something simple. The wiring harness, caps, rotors, & wires all have less than 20,000 on them, but I’ll check them nonetheless. No relevant analog codes come up, so we shall see…

RTH, my car will upshift at 6000 if the kickdown solenoid is disconnected, otherwise it's 6400. You might want to unplug the kickdown (wire at rear passenger side of tranny) and see what happens. If there's no change, you have a problem of some sort. The tach is quite accurate, easily within 100rpm of actual. Scott's site should be back up eventually, but there's been no ETA published by Scott so we'll have to wait & see. Oh, and I don't necessarily own all that diagnostic stuff, lol. I've been collecting photos though. I do have a Snap-On scanner for MB, which works great on the 500E. I've got a setup for sale in the classifieds too.

If it's not your chip, what is it that allows you to have 6400 WOT shift points? My rev limiter kicks in rather violently at about 6200. Regards, Eric

The 119.97x was limited to 6000 continuous, 6350 intermittent. Mine upshifts at WOT at an indicated 6350-6400 rpm, even with the stock LH module and stock chip. See this PDF file, page 14, for details. The chip didn't affect this at all.

It must be something with the 4.2L programming if you're hitting a limiter at 6200 (or, your tach is off...?).

Remember, I've been running the 5.0 LH for some time now but the limiter has remained the same. Regards, Eric

The weather cleared up a bit, and I was able to sneak the E500 out for a little exercise. It looks like I need to eat a little humble pie. I was wrong about the upshift RPM's. It's not 6400. After watching a video of a WOT run, I went frame-by-frame to try and determine the exact shift point. From what I can tell, my shift points are - approximately:

1-2: 6200-6300rpm
2-3: 6300-6400rpm
3-4: 6000-6100rpm

Click here to watch the video (20MB download). Note that after each upshift, the RPM drops back to around 4400, just past the torque peak, and right in the meat of the powerband (according to my dyno charts). I think a 6100-6300 shift point is nearly perfect.

BTW, this run was with 3/4 tank of fuel on a level road, 32°F ambient temp, 2400' elevation. I was pretty happy with the 25-second time from 0-130, too (measured via AP-22 performance computer). Average uncorrected times (over two runs) were:

0-60: 5.85 sec
0-100: 13.85 sec
0-130: 24.90 sec

And that was with a little wheelspin & ASR engagement at launch, at 2400'. With LSD at sea level, and/or with 15 fewer gallons in the tank, it should be even quicker.
