I want to paint the engine bay, and I am removing the sway bar to make sure I get paint under where it sits in the engine bay. I also want to paint the sway bar.

I really like a clean engine bay.

Thumbs up Detailing

Oh yes, me too ! .

I hate old used cars that some idiot used two cans of Zolotone or flat black right over the wires, old oil, stickers, carby and so on....

I don't polish the engine compartments but I sure do clean them hospital clean so if there's a weep, seep or other problem, I know straightaway .

Recently my alternator belt began to squeal in the heavy rain, I adjusted it and noticed bits of black rubber on the P.S. pump ~ wouldn't have noticed that if everything was oily like other's vehicles usually are .

I hate that too. Some previous owner of my 240D painted the top half of the block with flat black, as well as painted the giant hole in the battery tray and the rust underneath the battery tray in an apparent attempt to stop the rust...my sisters old '65 Rambler American had the entire engine bay and engine receive the "rustoleum special" treatment.

Also, received my transmission today thanks to forum member Jerod from Nashville.

Kinda greasy and crusty right now, but I'll have it cleaned up, new filter, gaskets, banjo bolt washers, and painted as soon as possible.

Another small update, I picked up a tube of seam sealer and took care of the areas that needed seam sealer. My hope is to have the engine bay painted this week. I'm currently sitting and waiting for the seam sealer to cure so that I can start masking off some of the wiring and remaining tubes/lines in the engine bay.

I also got my brake booster out and painted it as well as the metal heater control valve to thermostat housing hose. I was even able to salvage the original sticker from the brake booster and glued it back on. Loving the look of that.

Pulled the sway bar today, will definitely need to do control arm bushings and ball joints. The upper bushings are shot, ball joints are not dangerous yet, but have some play in them.

Sway bar is coming home with me tonight to get cleaned up and have a fresh coat of paint. Ordering a complete gasket kit today as well, with some other bits and pieces from Arizona.

Talking The _Journey_

? Isn't it fun putting massive labor and no $mall amount of ca$h into some old car that has little value to anyone else ? .

I keep buying little bits and bobs for my '82 240D and I don't even drive it much anymore but I do love the darn thing to pieces .

Seriously, this is truly a labor of love. I do intend to hang on to this car for a while - and it is going straight back to daily driver duty as soon as everything is all buttoned up, but I am definitely pouring more money into this car than its worth.

Wouldn't trade it for anything though, I love the car. The feeling of driving it, the smell of the interior, how it sounds...I can't wait to give the Japanese appliance back to my girlfriend and start driving my diesel again.

Very pleased with the result of today's toiling. I got the engine bay (mostly) painted.

I am pleased with the color matched spray paint I got mixed up at Bill Wrights Paint Store in La Puente, CA. It's a good match once it dries for a few days.

Not much of an update, but finally got my pistons in.

I am also getting all parts together for powder coating, trying to make sure I get everything on one go.

This weekend I'm also going to start with my new windshield cowl drains. Since they are NLA from Mercedes, I want to make a mold of mine and cast new ones from silicone.

Got a lot of parts on the way from Arizona, including my timing chain, head gasket, chain guides, valve guides, sway bar bushings...plenty of stuff to keep me busy.

I am quite excited to get my valve guides delivered - I will have them installed plus all the valves cut, and I should he ready to get the engine together. There are no doubt parts that I'm still forgetting, but I'm getting closer to the final product.

I do still need a new glow plug relay (for the pencil style plugs) and switch over valve, if anyone has these parts and wants to get rid of them please message me.

I got all my parts together for sandblasting and powdercoating. The color will remain a secret until they're all done and I can have a big reveal

I'm hoping to get this project finished up as soon as possible - looks like my boss may be selling the business (where I'm keeping my car) so I have to move with purpose and get it back on the road as quickly as possible.

Is that seam sealer in liu of welding?

No, seam sealer was applied to these areas from the factory, it was just eaten away by battery acid, worn away by A/C hose rubbing, or (as in the case of my expansion tank brackets) just not there to begin with.

You can use body adhesive in lieu of welding on some parts (mainly large body panels), but seam sealer is just there to fill the seams where moisture has the potential to collect, but welding would be unnecessary/impossible.

Got my drive shaft back from the shop, had it shortened 4" so that it will fit with the OM617. I just hope that I won't have excessive vibration from it after everything is assembled (only cost me $110).

Also got some of the new wiring sheath installed. I used heat shrink tape to make sure the ends are sealed up nicely. Definitely like the look this gives the engine bay.

Last picture is just to show off a bit. A guy started a mobile detailing shop near by where my Benz is sitting. I asked him to just give her a quick wash, and he went above and beyond and polished out the hood for me (he couldn't stand too see those wet sanding scratches either, apparently). Turned out very nice, love how the Milan brown paint looks when it's properly shined up.

Also picked up a practically NOS vacuum pump from Mr. Bill Whitmore. It has less than 10K miles on it, I was happy to grab it since I think I may have screwed my original pump up while pressing in new bearings.

Stopped by the pick your part in Santa Fe Springs and got myself a nice little birthday present for me. Non saggy, non torn seat from an '82 240D. I will swap it over to my driver side frame, so when it's finally back up and running I will at least be comfortable.
