Fixed it!

Thanks for the advice. Removing the side vent helped, especially on reattaching the cable. It was still necessary to get underneath though to remove the ductwork going to the vent to get to the...

I believe the 190D (145,000 miles) I just bought has a worn deferential. Here the symptoms:
1. On movement only, inc when in neutral
2. NOT worse with accel/heavy load
3. noticeable when slow not...
