Check the rubber fuel line that comes up the fire wall. Where the metal fuel line is attached the rubber may have dried out and is leaking... My 98 E300D had a similar issue a couple of years ago...

I would expect that most of the small parts are standard across all models and if they need the Viton for the newer models for the Ultra Low Sulfur that they would also start using them for the OEM...

Passenger side has the battery, a fuse block w/vacuum switch and next to that a device enclosed in a foam...

and
Idles warm at 0.1 gallon per hour...

Simulate a cold engine all of the time and that is more fuel going out the tail...

I recently had all of the clear lines and IP outlet seals replaced on my 98 to mitigate acceleration lag and a light aroma of diesel in the engine compartment... The indy where I had the work done...
