So my 70' 220D has progressively gotten worse at starting up and eventually wouldnt turn over at all. I thought it was perhaps a leak coming from one of the fuel fittings next to the fuel primer...

Oh, so you are saying the shaft should stick further out. Makes sense because I would get more clearance and the hub would not be rubbing.

steering wheel rubbing/grinding when turning (pic included)

My steering wheel hub is slightly rubbing on the two copper metal prongs and also a third piece. The metal bits come off and make it grind when turned. I tried lubing it with grease but only helps...
