Exactly. I would only consider a bypass in a warm climate, like San Diego or something. Anywhere it gets cold, fix the t-stat... don't bypass it.

No need to replace the whole t-stat... just the O-ring inside. Cost is about a dollar. You can look up the part number in the online Russian EPC:
