Is changing the clock light a DIY? If so.... how do I get to it? Thanks in advance.
I had my check enginge light go on for about 2 days. Has been out for about a week. Any thoughts? I've really been enjoying this forum. The Gwagon dealership (Europa) has been advertising in the local paper a lot recently. saw a Gwagon in the classifieds this weekend. (I live in Santa Fe) HD |

ML instrument cluster
HD:
I'll give an outline of what is involved and you can decide to try it or not. The 2 dash colored panels on each side of the steering column need to be removed first, then the dash colored strip at the top of the steering column. With these removed, the black frame that surrounds the cluster is removed by pulling out on the 2 tabs at the bottom of the black surround and pulling downwards on the frame. Next, the cluster itself can be removed by loosening the 2 black plastic fasteners at the top and removing the 7mm screws at each side of the cluster. The cluster will come out quite easily without removing the steering wheel. There is one electrical connector that will need to be removed from the cluster, it is a locking swing-latch that is pretty easy to figure out. The bulbs are easy to replace by using a small screw driver, they are 1/4 turn to remove. The bulbs most likely will need to come from a dealer or mercedesshop/fastlane I'm sure sells them as well. I recommend doing at least the 3 behind the displays (clock, temp, odometer) since you are going through the trouble to remove the cluster. You may want to replace the illumination bulbs as well, but not the bulbs for the warning displays, I've never had one of these fail yet.

Gilly, might just try it! Any trick to removing the initial 2 panels? Good advice about changing all 3. Figures that the check engine light never fails! LOL Not sure why mine decided to stay dark?

Take the panels off with a medium size screw driver. Insert the tip and pull out on the panels, don't try to "lever" them off, you could damage the dash if you do. The check engine light could be many things, if it comes back take it to have the system checked out. Gilly

One possible reason for your check engine light is your gas cap not being screwed on properly from your last fillup. If you haven't done the ritual turning-of-the-cap-until-you-hear-the-rachety-clicking sound, then that will fire up the light and will stay on (until your next fill-up, or until you get that cap-turning thing right).

Gas cap
If the gas cap is loose, you will also notice that the amber low fuel indicator on the fuel gauge will also blink rapidly for awhile just before the check engine light comes on. The check engine light will eventually turn itself off in the event that the gas cap is found to be loose and tightened up, it may take a couple days before it turns itself off.
