Convertible top 1990 300SL

My top goes down without any problems. When I raise the top, the pin on the driver's side at the back of the soft top will not latch automaticaly. I can latch it manually as described in the owner's manual. I tried using the search feature but didn't see anything addressing this. Can someone help me?
