another K1 thread

Just wanted to pass along that I changed the K1 accumulator in the trans valve body with the upgrade kit, and there is no sign of flare on the 2-3 shift. Upshifts seem crisper also. Success in my case. Next time you do your trans service, if you haven't changed the K1 or don't know if it's been changed or not(the upgrades have black plastic pieces not white) change this $12 part. It's laughably easy, I got the complete instructions from MBZ.org before the page went down. Will scan to PDF if anyone so desires. No flare in the 2-3 and crisper upshifts means less wear to a 20 year-old tranny.

Thumbs up

Should this be done even if the trans shows no problems?

I wouldn't....if it shifts quick and clean on the 2-3 shift there is no need.

Does anyone know if this modification would help a trans that doesn’t actually flare from 2-3, but instead has a slight delay when 2nd releases and before 3rd engages, but then slams pretty hard when 3rd does grab? Mine does that while accelerating hard with about ¾ accelerator pedal travel, but does not exhibit this behavior when driving easy, or when at full blast kick down mode; only at moderately hard acceleration.

try adjusting your bowden cable--it effects shift occurances (late/early) it migh be causing your problem.

I thought the '85s had all the upgrades in their transmission! I guess I have another project to do. My transmision is leaking bad. Im hoping its just the pan seal. The one that I have there right now came from a kit which is thinner than the one I purchsed from the dealer. Could this be an upgrade too?

Nopers. Mine didn't at least.

If your pan gasket's thinner, could be that it's torqued too much. Watch out with the torque on the tranny pan bolts. I cannot imagine the trans pan gaskets for the MB diesels varying in thickness like that no matter where you buy them, but anything's possible. For ultimate piece of mind get it from the dealer OR Fastlane. Torque on the pan bolts is something like 6ft/lb(8 N-m according to forum member Gilly) but I would confirm that. Overtightening the pan bolts is the most likely cause of leaks at the pan gasket.

When was your car built? Mine was the end of '84 for the '85 year. I'll probably do this upgrade next time I drop my pan just for piece of mind.
