Texas Diesel Shin-Dig

Bill and I have been discussing getting all of us Texas Diesel owners together.

Some time around March (specifically March 10 to March 17) would be perfect. It's not cold, but it's not to hot (for those of us w/o working A/C). Anyone interested post suggestions on where it should be.

Personally I would love to meet somewhere in the Hill Country, thats some nice driving. We could also meet in Waco, or further South.

COOL IDEA!!!

This would be great if I can get the 240D healthy enough to drive again by then. Me, I don't like malls either. If there is a good park, lake, hiking, etc. type place where we could all get together and make a BBQ or something like that. I would need to know the exact dates early enough to rearrange my schedule accordingly as I work wierd hours.

Temple is pretty good (looking at a map of Texas)

we could stop by one of the many lakes that dot Texas

Works for me.

Wonder how long it takes to get to Temple from North Dallas?

(Last time I had gone that way was with my mom in her Audi - at 95+ most of the way)

well 35 has a W (to Ft Worth) and a E (To Dallas) so I guess I can shave off an hour off your estimate of Temple-Ft Worth-Dallas since I'm taking Ft Worth out of the equation.

I should have the cooling system fixed by March so I'll be able to hurl my 300D down the freeway at 85+ most of the time

Well guess that means we have a place set out, the general time frame (March 10-17). Now we need to know who all is going to show up.

I will be there. Just may not be able to do it with the 240D. All will depend on what the final diagnosis is on that car when I get back from my trip in Feb.

Road Trip! The ole 300D should be broken in well from the engine rebuild I'm doing right now and this sounds like a good first trip.

Is this get together going to be one day long or the weekend?

In addition to Lake Belton, take a look at McKinney Falls State Park just east of Austin - this is one of the crown jewels in the state park system. Centrally located in TX, easy access from IH 35 (about 3 mi.), picnic areas, camping, group facilities, restrooms, etc., etc. But, the best part is the uniqueness of the park - the falls, clear running water from Onion Creek, unique geology, lots of nice trees, hiking, old structures from the original settlers, swimming, etc., etc.

I am not knocking Lake Belton, but McKinney Falls is another place to consider. TXBill, perhaps on your way through Austin you could check out McKinney Falls also (assuming you're coming from Houston on 290 and then going north on IH 35 to Temple).

If everyone is a bit more adventurous and wants to see a bit more of the Hill Country, then Lake Travis is also a choice place. Located about 20 miles west of Austin, Lake Travis has many of the same amenities as McKinney Falls and Lake Belton, but also has some really nice views of the lake and surrounding hill country from the park at Mansfield Dam.

My, very cheap, $0.02 cents worth!

Is this gonna be on weekend? I'll be there if it is! I'm not sure which D's I'm going to take...Anyway, below is an estimated mileage from Yahoo map for each city for comparison. It would be easier for Dann from Corpus if we meet in Austin. Sorry! Capt kirt

Austin Temple

162 183.7.......Houston

Thumbs up

I love a good road trip. I would drive clear down to S. Padre Island if that place was chosen. I would have to take a personal day or two though.

In the 4 and a half years of living down here, I haven't seen hardly any of the state parks in TX.

As my schedule stands now, I will be in Europe both of those weekends. Even if something happens to my schedule allowing me to make it, will I be shot, or my car keyed if I show up in a Benz that runs on gasoline?

Have a great day,

TXBill:

OK, I did not know the exact route you would take. McKinney State Park is easy to find and get to since it is on the east side of IH 35 and you don't have to negotiate the more populated part of Austin located west of IH 35.

It would be great if Larry Bible can make the meet (who knows perhaps the date of the meet can change or Larry's plans will). All Larry has to do is put the diesel emblems from one of his other cars onto his gas M-B and we'll accept him as one of the diesel brethren!!

How lucky can I get ?

I belong to the two wheeled Gravely tractor club, the Simplicity tractor club, etc , etc, and this is the first time anybody ever suggested having a meet half way close to me ! I am near Elgin, which by the back route is about 20 miles from McKinney Park.... I have never been there ... I will try in the next three weeks to get what information is available about its facilities. ( like if it is open in March ) that might be nice. If I am lucky I will have my digital camera with me and post pics for yall.... I would not suggest parks west of Austin because they tend not to have many trees and are crowded by boaters for the most part.... and it is a bottle neck in terms of traffic getting to them...over east of Austin there is also Bastrop State Park... lots of pines and good fishing....has an actual date been formalized? Reservations might be in order (?) I have a 1981 300td-t turbowagon 280k , 1979 300td-tnonturbowagon parts car 110k, 1969 280se fourdoor for sale cheap. Greg
