Do you have ACC II (horizontal push buttons)?

Vertical Push buttons

No it has 4 vertical push buttons ...

DEF, BI-LEVEL, AUTO HI, AUTO LOW, OFF
I found a bad diaphram on the pass side fresh air door ... still acts the same with that bi-passed ????
Know of a good place to get VDO diaphragms?

Sorry, I meant ACC III with horizontal pushbuttons. You must have ACC II (must be an 81 or early 82 car because ACC III started during the 82 model year, I do believe).

Anyway, to answer your question, I have a VDO actuator literally in my hand from my parts car. It is the heavy-duty version (only one is used to work the main flap, not two of the single-action pink-and-black Behr actuators). It holds vacuum both directions. I was going to put it in my car but I have ACC III, which does not use the heavy VDO actuators.

It's yours in today's mail for $20 plus actual shipping. If interested, please confirm that the actuator you are replacing has two vacuum lines running into it (one for each direction).

Pay five bucks to George Murphy (george_murphy@compuserve.com) for his troubleshooting guide, which includes a vacuum diagram. He also sells parts at reasonable prices and dispenses advice.

Great idea. I just bought three diaphragms from him yesterday myself. According to the excellent repair pictorials at www.pindelski.com, which refer the reader to George Murphy, the heavy-duty VDO actuators are not repairable, though.

heater changes idle...must be due to vacuum leak. fact that applying the heater makes this change will help you find the leak point. I found in my library reference section "mitchell's" repair guides. this had much easier reading diagrams and procedures for finding leaks than the repair manual on CD. unfortunately, my leak is in the center flap pod (impossible to get at). not only that, the force of the pod openning and closing flap caused the plastic casing of the heater box to crack at the rivets and the pod is sitting loose.

Why don't you try disconnecting the line and plugging the vacuum on the engine side where it comes off the back of the intake and see if you still have the idle problem?

Smile Threw away ACC II

After getting everything to work:
1 bad diapram
2 broken vac lines
1 arm disc from flapper
and many other misc things
It worked as spec ... just took awhile sometimes
Was interesting to see what was going to come out next.
My wife who is in the middle of those hot flashes .....
said no way!! when she needs cold air ... it better be NOW
Took it all out !
Panel out of Ford escort fit perfect
wood from 380 SE to fill in the hole
Oh yeh, Slide out Cup holder out of a Honda under the radio
looks like it was designed for the car!
Cables to the flappers
Toyota valve in the heater line (cable controlled)
4 fan speeds through original fan resistors
AC on / off with switch through low temp/pressure safety
with line to Idle controller for idle speed.
YAHOOOO instant hot or cold and it's been days since she pulled over and told me to walk!!!!!!
Didn't fix idle but .....
idle controller from 85 380SE which book said wouldn't work ... had 2 extra pins.
worked perfect fixed all and cost $10 !!!!

Hey Drake,

You have succeeded in doing what I suspected could/should be done all along... It would be great if you could write up your mod's with sketches and pictures for the WIKI (the DYI link above). I have often wondered if a simple manual means of controlling the heat/ac was feasible. You completed the picture with the suggested parts to integrate or "fill" the holes...

Pleae consider writing up with sketches...

Thanks!

One more thing .... wasn't sure what to do with the Aux heater pump.
So wired it to the back window defroster ... if it is cold enough to need that ...then more hot water should be in order!
I'M out sea now so will post the how to later when home and can take pics
Do have pic of final look before polishing ... see if I can get it to stick here
