Need your inputs on 280sl please

Knew a guy with a 68 280sl, it has about 100k miles. very good condition, the paint is not original. What would be the going price for this kind of car? And I would like to hear what your impressions on all the pros and cons and what to look and check before I hand the man the money.

Thank you for reading.

Alex

Check out this link: http://pagoda113.com/kb.php?category=%2FEvaluating+a+Pagoda

The main criteria to watch for is rust. Prices seem to start
at $6000 for a basket case. $12K for a reasonable driver.
$20K for a quality example, $30K+ for really good ones.

I get a lot of waves, thumbs-up, comments with mine and
unsolicited offers to purchase.

Thank you VRSmith,

Wow, I guess prices are all relative to the car's condition, I will come prepare to get dirty. I will not buy this car unles it has a solid frame and free of rust. By the way $12000 is the price.

Thank you again
Alex

That sounds like a good plan, Alex. Paint and
mechanicals are relatively easy to deal with.
Rust is for experts, (or parts). My 250SL had
all mechanicals redone and a good paint job
and I paid $18,000. Remember that it is an
old car with dated comfort features. The
automatics take some getting used to.
Check out the soft top as well. The fabric
is cheap, ($450), but the frame is $$$$.
Hard tops are pricey but I have only used
mine once; on the drive home after I bought
the car!

Hi, fellow BCer.
Where on earth can you find the material for a SL softtop for THAT price ?
Would that include the rearwindow ? I have 1970 280 SL that needs a new top, the frame is fine I have someone to do the labour ! Please make my day, I had quotes ten times as high !!!!!!
CHEERS !

The MBCA Star magazine has ads for http://www.hirschauto.com/
who show the tops for under US$400.

SL soft top

Thanks for the tip, yep those prices are more reasonable. Question: Have you evre ordered from them ? Have you seen one, any idea about quality ? Ease of installation ? I would let a comercial shop do the installation.
Thank's again !
WITT
