I'd say go with a Miata or a Porsche Boxster. The Miata is more reliable, but the Porsche is one incredible car. The Toyota MR-2 is another option, but it has no trunk space whatsoever. As for the SLK being a "chick car" it is no more a chick car than a Miata, MR-2, or small SL. Who cares? Either you are married and don't need to impress the chicks anymore, or you are single and girls will be naturally drawn to it as it is a chick car. It is a win win situation

If you are looking for the European chic, I'd get a Saab Viggen Convertable. I like the looks, and fast as hell. Just watch out for the torque steer.

I like your logic about the chick car thing, Volkl42! I did drive a friend's manual SLK once, it handled like it was on rails. Just the ESP and ASR dampened the fun a little!! The Boxster....hell yes....but I bet those are still pretty expensive. I might have to wait a while for the prices to go down on those. Also, I have heard that the early Boxsters have had some quality issues.

You may be right about all those cars being "chick cars" but I do think the SLK is a just little more chick than the others.

Here is another option: C5 Corvette!!!

Just a quick question for all you 129 experts What years were the R129 300SLs (or SL320s) made and were they all M104s?

R129 300SL was made, I think, from 1989 to 1992; that's when they brought out the SL280/SL320. At least I think this is right. I'll check at home tonight (if I ever get to go home, that is).

I like the SLK; it's a bit chick-tastic, but I never felt uncomfortable driving my mother's (well, not for that reason, I was pretty uncomfortable when I span on a wet road). A pal who is very hairy of chest, a man's man and all that, plays a lot of sport, drinks beer, smokes fags (as in, likes cigarettes, not guns down homosexualist men), shags birds &c, &c, he has a nice black SLK230 and loves it.

Reliability is good. Mum's is over three year's old and has never missed a beat. Drives well, and you can have a manual.

JJ, LOL you really came alive in this thread! I quite agree about the SLK, it does have a bit of a girly stigma, but I think only if you are foofy and go for a red or yellow one. I think a nice silver, or especially a black one with some nice 17" or 18" if possible, AMG's, I think then you have a pretty cool looking car.

Now as an expensive option that will get me hightailed out of this forum, have you seen the 2002 M3's? I absolutely have no emotions for BMW's, they dont do anything for me at all. But the 2002 M3 is a very pretty car with some mean specs, worth a look if I wasnt fortunate enough to be riding the best and had to take second place, LOL.

Over that Ive seen the S2000 get some nifty reviews, and I think Honda is a great company. I think I would get one of these over the boxster, I havent heard any great things about it.

And of course my last desperate plea to you, I still think above all in this world is a 90's on up SL500 (or any SL!)!! Get one!!

I got one of them in my garage, selling it in May. Nice enough car, surprisingly good in snow....loses the rear end like a 911 if you overcook it on wet roads. No power steering, takes lots of effort to drive and too much turbo lag for my taste.

I much prefer driving my SL!

Used to be a lot in the Toronto area where I live.

Many years ago I owned a TVR 2500M. What a nightmare that car was....on average it was about 300 miles between trips to the shop.

You should drive a Honda S2000, it will dust the Boxster and it will handle much better. Only the Boxster S can keep up with that monster. Besides, it's a Honda, what can go wrong? I just turned in my lease on one. I liked it better than my 84 911. The BMW Z3 are slow pigs. Or, check out the new Z convertiblw out this summer.
