91 420SEL Steering Parts
Hi,
I am considering replacing as much of the steering parts and suspension that is within my abilities. Looking at the CD Manual they always list special tools that are needed. I have found in the past that many "special tools" can be fabricated out of pipe and metal scraps. But certainly not all. So I guess I am looking for any opinions out there. I have some clunking going on when going over bumps. The left front tire is wearing on the inside edge. I will need to buy two tires for the front and have the car aligned. I just know that they will suggest some replacemen parts and I wanted to narrow the field. Ron

What you'll need that can't be easily fabricated or safely skipped is a spring compressor. You can rent a spring compressor from www.************************ and there's some talk of the folks ont he forum who have one renting them out as well.
Get an estimate from a reputable MB independent then decide if it's worth doing it yourself. I've replaced my share of MB cylinder heads and transmission and there's no way I'm replacing ball joints and control arm bushings. I've heard that independents charge ~$2000 to rebuild the front end of a W126. Money well spent if you ask me. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

I recently did most of my FS. You do need to take the spindles in for ball joint replacent becasue they require a special tool. The upper control arm is a PITA on the drivers side but can be done, I'm living proof of that. The lower brake bearing bracket bushings, the 'L' shaped bit, can be done easily. The spring would need to be removed to fix the lower control arm bushing so I didn't do that one.
