190E Gas Gage broken

Help!!!! I bought a 1993 190E and the gas gage is broken. I hate re-fueling every 200 miles. I can use any advice you can give me on getting this fixed. I wouid like to fix this at home, or this something that I need to take to a shop?

Might the problem be with the sender unit in the tank rather than the gauge? Assuming that the other panel instruments work, then you can rule out the fuses and wiring loom to the instrument cluster. The sender unit is an easily replaced unit, just pull the trunk lining to expose the gas tank under the rear window; unplug and unscrew the sender and replace with a known good one. I would try that first.
