Poor 16v idle related to tacho????

Hi all

2.5 16v non-cat

Surging idle - tried basics, reset mixture, etc, etc

Was pointed out to me the other day that my tacho is bouncing around a bit, press the throttle, rev counter increases, let go of throttle, and the needle bounces around before settling at idle (or not as the case may be... )

Anyway, someone mentioned a "hall effect sensor" on the back of the tacho.

Is there ANY WAY at all that a bad tacho/hall effect sensor could effect the idle on a 16v?

The idle is surging from 200rpm up to 1200rpm, if you leave it long enough it settle down at 1000rpm but still sounds lumpy

Pointers appreciated

Thanks!
