Hi, been having this problem for quit a while. My car on undergoing hard acceleration gives sounds that seem to come from the exhaust. Sound only comes on between 2500-3000 rpm (In 3rd gear). On bringing it to the local dealer. They said most probably its the catalytic converter. Replaced the catalytic converter. Thing is, problem still exists. Only possible ideas?
Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated. MB W124 1994 E200 M111 Engine |

carge,
Have you checked the exhaust for leaks? Have it checked at the junction of manifold to pipe, and at each junction point. This is where mine was leaking and causing noise on acceleration. ------------------ William 76 240D (W115) - 555K miles 78 300D (W123) - 200K+ miles -- SOLD |

Carge, it is definitly coming from the exhaust system. The easiest way to check is have the car on a lift, start the engine and have someone listen to the exhaust system during acceralation. Or shake the exhaust system and see is it hitting anything. If it is, it could mean the hanger for the exhaust system is bad and needs to replace.

Brought the car to the dealers, they seem to be puzzled by the strange noise as well, checked the exhaust pipe for leaks, none were found. However, the mechanic I spoke to did not take a look at the connection from the manifold to the exhaust. I was told that if there were any leaks at the exhaust, even if the car is not accelerating, noises could be heard. Actually, the "noise" comes on as a form of intermittent "puttering" sound. Really puzzled by what could be the possible problem. Usually, on accelerating, the usual sound heard is the gradual "vroom" from soft to loud. However, for my car, just before the "vroom" becomes loud, the "puttering" sound comes on and goes off. Is it necessary for the entire exhaust to be removed in order to have a thorough check to acertain whether the exhaust is leaking?
After much test-driving, I was told by the mechanic that nothing was wrong with my car. Seems like no one could give me a reasonable explaination about this "strange sound". Wonder if anyone here has a similar situation to mine. |

Get it up in the air, start it up and block the ends of the exhaust with a couple layers of rags in your hands. If there are any openings in the system, you will hear them. If the system is intact, you will not be able to block the exhaust for more than a second or so.

Hey guys, went to my mechanic. He couldn't really hear the strange sound at first. After a while, got it. To him, the sound was faint. But to me, it was loud. He told me that he wasn't very sure. But he thinks its the torque converter that's giving the sound. Told me to continue driving until the sound got louder and then he can check & change it if necessary(coz its very expensive & he ain't sure about it). My questions are, what are the sure tell-tale signs that the torque converter is producing the sound??
Are there any long term effects if it is really the torque converter producing the sound on acceleration?? Will result in any damage??? My car does not have any abnormalities other than this strange sound on acceleration. Any comments is appreciated. Thanks Carge Make: MB W124 E200 MY: 1994 |
