Since there was talk of the 722.6 tranny, I'll bump it.

Torque Converter Drain Question

I posted this question on another thread, but there appears to be some real experts here so I would like to repeat the question. I took my 98 E320 to the dealer to have the transmission serviced. When I got it back I noticed that the ticket only showed 4 qts of fluid used. From reading other postings on this site, and other sites, it was my impression that the 98 210 had a drain on the torque converter. I questioned the service advisor about this and after he checked with the service technician I was told that my transmission does not have a drain plug on the torque converter. The transmission is original. Do some 98's have a drain on the torque converter and some not?

Without a doubt it should have the drain plug. I could try to find the official change-over point (assuming I haven't posted it yet) if you want. About the only thing I can think of that would prevent it being there is if it was replaced at some point.

Yes, it certainly should have a drain plug. I'm fairly certain the plug was deleted in late 1999. Gilly will know the exact date.

Drain plug went away in September, 1999. I seem to recall seeing a Technical Bulletin from Mercedes saying that some of the sealed for life transmissions now require servicing. Anyone else seen that?

'99 E300TD 77,000 miles, with a torque converter drain plug, transmission serviced at 50,000 miles.

Sorry, couldn't find the info, just looked for a few minutes. I would maintain that the drain plug left about the same time the touch-shift started, at the beginning of the 2000 model year.

change it at 60,000 then i'm doing it.

I have the dealer do mine, they do the gaskets, filter et.al. It's not bad, like $150.00 - most of which is that $$ MB brand fluid, but it's the only thing MB will use, what I prefer anyway. Holds like 12 quarts or so.

I hate trifling with that tranny, so I just have them do it every 15k miles or so. Also have them change the tranny mounts and shifter bushings while it's there.

And the rear diff too.

i would like a copy please.

Yes the 98 should have the plug. Newer tech probably, didn't think any .6 has one.
In regards to the other posts just above this one, I sure don't see that bulletin posted yet (guy at shop I worked at says MB officially is NOT calling for fluid changes!)

Rotating Torque Converter

WE (dealer) have replaced/repaired at least 2000 of the 722.6 transmissions in the last 2 years! Spend the money.
I would have to agree with M.B.Doc...servicing the transmission is the way to go for long life. BTW

What is the best procedure for rotating the torque converter to access the drain plug. e.g wheels off the ground...27mm bolt to rotate engine...transmission placed in park or neutral? etc. Thanks

If it's resettable, it would be done with the shop computer. I doubt it's resettable. It was evidently just on earlier transmissions for engineering purposes.

I do prevenative maintenance on HD equipment for a living in my opinion it would not be anything but benificial to service the tranny at least every 50k.

I just did mine at 54k with 7.5qts of Pennzoil Multi ATF and it's been operating superbly.
