Mercedes 300TE Valve Cover

I am the second owner of a Mercedes 300TE ........................

For a long time this car had had a small oil leak coming from the valve cover.

I thought, no big deal .... I need a valve cover gasket.

It gets more complicated ... when I removed the valve cover I discovered a small crack in the cover.

Question, where can I purchase a new valve cover from?, or is this something that can be repaired?

Thanks - William Torres

A salvage yard comes to mind. Should be able to find a nice cover for short $$$. Naturally the cover isn't specific to a TE, but rather specific to the engine. For new, you could try Phil at the toll free FastLane number before trying the dealer.

In the meantime, before you get a new valve cover, clean it with acetone and put some epoxy on it. The blister pack syringe type epoxy at the hardware store should work ok. I epoxied a cracked hot water radiator in my house 13 yrs ago and it's still holding strong.

I agree with Kerry (and the candidates of the same name) but I'd use a good silicone rubber to seal the crack in the cover. Perhaps the stuff used for gasket making would work well in an oil environment. Let it cure overnight to be sure it is holding/adhering well.

I'd try JB Weld (couldn't come up with a political reference other than stretching to Jeb Bush) since I always have some in the garage. I used JB Weld on a couple of repairs to my Diesel turbo and EGR systems and they're holding up nicely.

It might be tricky if the crack extends to the mating surface. Make sure whatever patch you use is fully cured before you tighten the valve cover bolts... which really take very little tightenting.
