Hi All,
How long does an automatic transmission clutch last..? My 5 speed automatic tranny been getting a mis-shift lately .. From 4-5th there is 1-2 sec delay (in neutral) and then abruptly engaging on the 5th. This happen when accelerating.. I talked to the local dealer service manager, and he mentioned that there is certain diagnose to run to determine if some "value" reading is still within the spec. This "value" from what I have been told will tell whether the clutch pack is worn and need to be replaced... I am curious if the auto tranny need some interval clucth service like manual tranny..? I have always under the impression that the auto-tranny normally last 200-300k.. This mis-shifting never happened to me before. PS: I never track or drag my car.. Regardz,

Your auto tranny has 6 sets of multiple disc clutch stacks and the torque converter lockup clutch. With the exception of the torque converter clutch, which consists of a 2 disk stack, each clutch pack has at least 4 clutch dics with alternating steels in between. There is no one clutch that can easily be replaced. They are replaced during a rebuild.
The shop can look at the adaptation values in the transmission and see if any of the adaptations are at the limit.

Oh I forgot,
My car currently has around 82k original miles. Ali, what happened when the adaption value is outside the limit..? Does it mean I need to rebuild my transmission..? If so, I find it hard to believe I have to replace my transmission nowhere near 100K. ![]() Anyone ..else..? Regardz,

If the adaptation limits are at the limit it means that it could start to slip as the clutch packs will be too worn too hold a gear. Then the tranny will need to be replaced. Transmission life depends on a number of factors, rebuild at 82k miles is not impossible. I am unclear, did the dealer actually check the adaptation values or did he simply say that they can check the adaptation values?

I haven't got a chance to bring my car in for a diagnose yet..? Been very busy with works... I just thought I could find some more info before I bring my car in.. If my the tranny need rebuild at 82k, does that considered a premature wear and tear.. or is it considered a normal wear and tear..? Regardz,
