What’s a “HGS” control unit?
Could someone be kind enough to advise me as to what an "HGS" control unit does in my car? See the enclosed photo where it's seen sitting between the MAS and the OVP behind the battery. Had the car in a 'Merc specialist' garage last week and they'd never seen one before. Also cannot find any reference as to its function in any manual.

If you can get a part number off of it I'm sure a dealer parts counter could tell you what it is.

Has Bosch written on it and a part numb: 008 545 66 32.
Posted on a UK forum too and just had the reply: "that part number is a MB number not a Bosch and is the 5 speed auto gearbox control unit". If so though, wouldn't this be a common component of all our cars? Surprised the garage hadn't seen it before and haven't exactly been inundated with replies..... maybe it's something particular to my model (124.061). Where's the gearbox control unit normally located? |

In the US 124 models never got a five speed automatic - all were four speeds. We also didn't get a 124.061. Our first E class five speed auto was 1997 210 model - which I know did have some software problems. I suspect the four speed auto avoided software problems by not having software. They must not have had a comparable part, which would explain the silence from here.
