ASB Light

I have checked the postings and responses here for information on the ASB light that stays on constently on my 1987 560SL. I know that the antilock feature is disabled when this light is on and I think I read when this happens, the rear brakes do not work. I still get brake dust from the rear brakes even though the light is on. Is looking for the solution to the problem a hit or miss game or is there something more specific I need to look for?

I have seen where it could be sensors, actuator, relays, OVC, etc. Any other ideas or comments?

I really do appreciate this forum and the excellent and timely responses given.

Thanks.

ABS Light

Since you said it is on continuously, from the time the engine starts, then it is probably not the sensors. If it was a bad sensor, it would come on when the car starts rolling.

My guess is that it is the OVP, based on my experience with a 1989 420 SEL. This is just a guess.

There are a number of things that will give the light sysmptoms you are seeing. Voltage source (OVP) is a posibility but a bad alternator, a bad pump relay (in the actuator), a bad brake light circuit, a bad ABS controller, any open circuited sensor, etc. will turn the light on (or more precisely "leave the light on").

On systems before self diagnostics we use the Bosch ABS tester. Unplug the controller and plug it in. There were about 8 or so leds that were on when the proper circuits were OK.

When, the light is on the ABS is off and the brakes work as they would if there were no ABS. Dual circuit front and REAR hydraulic brakes.

ABS Light On after rolling

On a 1989 420 SEL, after rolling about 10 yards, the ABS light comes and stays on, until the car is turned off. I thought it would be the front sensors so I changed both of them, but the light still comes on, after rolling about 10 yards.

I'm thinking it is a sensor since, the light is not on when the car is started, and it comes on after the car has moved about 10 yards. I can ride the brakes and the light comes on, or the car can move without any braking, and the light comes on. The OVP was changed about a year ago and no other warning lights are on. After starting the car, the light is off, I press on the brakes, and the light does not go on.

How can I determine what is wrong? Any ideas? Should I just replace the rear axle sender unit too?

Where can I get an abs testor? Are they expensive?

Try the search for ABS and not ASB and see what you get.

Nice Surprise

Well, went for 20KM drive, parked it for an hour. Started her again, no abs light, as usual, but it did not come on at all during a 70KM drive. Stopped again for an hour. On starting, checked to make sure the bulb wasn't burned out, and again, the light is not on during the entire 70KM drive home. I guess these sensor need a break-in period?
