I just purchased my 1st MB, an '87 300D Turbo with 285,000 miles. It has been maintained very well, but has a few quirks. I have lots of questions but will start with just a couple of basic questions for now.
1)The left front strut is blown. What are recommended brands of struts?
2)I was told it needs new "flexi-disks" in the driveshafts. Are these easily replaceable? Am I correct in assuming that the pieces of the driveshaft just unbolt and I place the new disks between them and bolt it back together?
3) My brake pad sensor light is on. What are recommended brands of brake pads?
4)Are there any other reference websites I should be looking at?

Thanks for any and all replies.

Hi Chris - congratulations!
1) I would go with Bilstein struts, Boge and Sachs are also fine.
2)The flex-disks are probably best left for a tech to replace - I was told the bolts have to go back in a particular order. One of the techs (or more experienced members) on this site will probably be able to advise you better.
3)OEM pads are the best for this car, no question. They produce a lot of brake dust, but outperform everything else (in a stock setup)
4)You've just found the best MB site out there!

Nicks responses were very good except I will take issue on the flex discs.

There are three bolts on the flange from the transmission and three different ones on the flange at the driveshaft. Just make sure the bolts go back in the same flange that they came out of. This is not that difficult. The same is true on the back.

Good luck,

Cool - thanks, Larry. I will rethink doing my own front flex disc as well.

Only one comment on flex discs. MB made most of the late models idiot proof but there is a right way and a wrong way to put them on. If you look at the disc, it is often easy to see that there are three metal bars connecting the six bolt holes. The driveshaft is designed to be pulled by the metal straps; not pushed by them. On earlier models there were arrows disguised on the outside. Most later models have sleeves that keep you putting the right hole onto the shaft and flange.

Thanks for the information. I just bought this car 5 days ago from the original owner ( my sister-in-law). I hope to have time this weekend to crawl underneath it and take a look.

There are other issues with electrics and the two rear windows, etc. But I will wait until I resolve the safety items first.

Can't add much that hasn't already been covered. I might add there is an e-mail list specifically for Mercedes diesel owners. Lots of valuable diesel-specific chat happens there. Check it out at and follow the links.

two things on the flex disc issue:
when my 95 e300d needed a new flex disc, the
OEM part came with new bolts and nuts, so MB
answered the replace-don't replace questiion
for me.
since this is a new car in your stable, it might pay you to have a good tech put it up
on the lift. this way you can check out the under side for any items that need service
I've found a great shop that did it for around 50 bucks.
good luck
