Can fuel sender bump inside the tank?

I have a hollow ting sound when I sow down that sounds like perhaps it is the fuel sender in the trunk. Could they make a sound? My fuel guage stopped working a year ago and I just count the miles. What is the best diagnostic procedure?

yes, the fuel tank sending unit can make that noise. I have replaced one for that very reason on a 380 se.
