ECE Glass on DOT headlights for 94 W124 plus more!
so as I understand it, for model years 94-95 the headlight internals are pretty much identical to the ECE units, only with a different glass lens. The DOT lens is cemented/glued to the housing right; as opposed to the ECE lenses which would normally just screw in. Is there any known procedure for removing the DOT glass and replacing it with the ECE lens......besides pulling like a monkey? Heat guns, screw drivers etc?
and I'll just throw it in one more time as I have searched all up and down the forum......does any body know the part numbers for the city light sockets (preferably the wedge-bulb receiving kind as opposed to the T4W? Or where I could find such sockets? |

The plastic frames come with the lens .. you just pop off the plastic clips..
Early ones had a phillips screw in the back, upper corner There was a TSB where Benz told Dealers to glue the clips in place so that ECE code could not be used, but very few did it. [ DOT cops] Last edited by Arthur Dalton; 09-22-2004 at 05:52 PM. |

hehe, thanks Arthur, I kinda figured you would be the one to chime in. Thanks for all the info, you've been more than helpful. I ordered the lens' today as well as hella clear indicators from PUMA. Any idea on the part numbers for the city lamp sockets? Or can I just walk into the dealer, tell them what I want and they'll know what I'm talking about? |

Not sure on the City's .. I only know the reflectors have the cut-out hole for them , but no mount/sockets...so, I assume they use the same reflector for both...
Prob w/city on US lights is you have to grab power from side marker/corner lamps circuit Last edited by Arthur Dalton; 09-22-2004 at 11:11 PM. |

A note of caution on older models
It may well be possible to substitute a Euro-code lens on USA spec reflector if the car is a late enough model to have come with H-4 bulbs even in the USA versions, but earlier models which used the miserable USA type 9004 bulb are designed for the system of low beam optics which became obsolete in about 1955 but was still required in the US until the early 90's. Swapping a Euro lens onto a reflector with a 9004 bulb (or most USA lenses onto a reflector with an H-4 bulb) will produce useless and dangerous low beam patterns in most cases. I've done a number of experiments of this sort, and it doesn't work at all.

The ones we are referring to use 9003 HB2s.. not the 9004 that you mention..and you are correct on the 9004s .. they are terrible... |
