97 S500 losing freon

Doing a favor for a friend and in a pinch was able to get it cooling again by adding a can of R134A. Checked for leaks in a few spots, tried using my bag of 126 chassis tricks like a leaky expansion valve but couldn't find it, not above the gas pedal like I'm used to. It was low on charge, not enough to lock out the compressor but close. I have heard the evaporator horror stories but they usually happen to the early 140 cars, correct? What other weak areas should I be looking at? Should have put some dye in it, huh?

Had a problem on my 1992 300SE. Scared to death that it was the evaporator, turned out to be a leaky Schrader valve. Easy fix.
