Question 380sl auxillary water pump purpose?

On my 1984 380sl I have an auxillary water pump. Can anyone tell me what it's function and how do you test it. Would it have anything to do with my car running very hot (105c)?

If it's anything like mine, it circulates water through the heater core. Shouldn't have much to do with overheating.
