Engine Error Codes

How do you read any error codes on a 1988 560sl
No one sells a reader for it
Do you need a scan tool??
Any help would be appreciated

Only a California car has computer codes that can be scanned from that type of car. IF that is a Calif car then there would be a LED & push button on the diagnostic connector under the hood.

Does that mean because mine is not a Calif. car
I have no way to find out the error code if the check engine comes on?

The only item that can turn on the check engine lamp on a federal version 1988 560SL is the O2 sensor having NO activity for 5 minutes!

The computer has NO ability to store codes.
