Poor engine performance 300te

This might be a little fluffy question, but my engine is just weak. It runs fine and temperature and oil pressure are all fine, but it feels like 50 of the 180 horses have gone to the slaughter house and turned into glue.

What can I do??? The car is from 1990, but coming to think of it, it performs only slightly sharper than my old 300 tdt of 1985...

(It drinks gas like all the horses were awake, though...)

Plugged catalytic converter comes to mind. When was the last time any maintenance was done (plugs, filters). OH and make sure the throttle valve cable (the cable that goes from the engine down to the right side of the transmission) is connected, I've seen these come disconnected for some off reason, then the transmission doesn't shift properly and you'd swear it's a lousy engine problem.

In addition to Gilly's comments, I would suggest to look at the O2 sensor.

i needed new wires, cap and rotor to fix poor performance and economy. of course my car exhibited rough running characteristics that clued me in.
if the previous suggestions dont work try changing these.

Yeah, the TE drinks gas (19 mpg in town, 22 highway, usually).

Check for vac leaks. If you have throttle lag on takeoff (push the pedal down and wait.....then it zooms), the idle control valve hoses are shot and leaking, big vac leak so you have mixture control problems.

It starts in second unless you floor it, so that may be part of the problem (or at least the perception of a problem).

Check the idle mixture too -- of way off, you will get cruddy perfomance off idle until it stabilizes.
