My '99 CLK 430 has only 8500 miles. I had the oil changed at 3000 mi. even though the dealer said it didn't need it. Now the service indicator is illuminated. Should I change my oil again. It is really necessary to spend $$ on a MB service with so few miles?

Just read prior posts; realized that this question has been asked/answered to death. Thanks.............

Yes it is necessary to spend money on oil changes. This will only help your engine last longer and require less service in the future. If you don't like paying the dealer to change it (they charge an arm and a leg) than maybe try doing it yourself.

In this case your oil change is free. You pay nothing for scheduled oil changes or any other maintenance except wearables such as brake pads and tires for the first 50,000 miles.

I change my oil at my own expense between the FSS intervals. When the light comes on, the change is on them, zero dollars for anything. If you want to use your own oil brand, such as Mobil One you will have to take it to them with the car. But dino oil is free.

do as larry says, Change it hot and Change it often.

Oil is cheap compared to repairs later on because of infrequent oil changes.

You're 99 CLK does not carry a maintenance free contract as does the new models. A & B services come out of your pocket. My opinion is to definitely bring your car in for the service. It's not just an oil change, there is a list of things that are checked (tire wear, brakes, fluids, etc.) This would be your first A service and expect your B service roughly 10k miles down the road (depends on oil quality/elapsed time). I also think that changing the oil in between intervals is a must. There's no way that 8-10k miles on the same oil will keep your engine clean and healthy. I've seen oil filters crumble in your hand from this. On time services are a plus with your vehicle history. My 2/100.

Sorry to get your hopes up. I thought that your car also had the free maintenance.

If you plan on keeping your car for a long time and many miles, and you should, change oil hot and often, even if you don't do anything else in the way of preventive maintenance. Don't get me wrong, I still encourage complete preventive maintenance. Maybe you can find a good independent shop to cut the cost of this. There are some independent shops that are better than your dealer for service. Check out the MB shops forum here.

Best of luck,
Change oil hot and change oil often,
