Has anyone considered or would it be just to crass to polish the valve cover (I presume it is aluminium?).

If the cover has been cast the surface is likely too pitted for the job to be easy.

Bigblue1,

I missed reading this post of yours earlier. I believe the valve covers are actually a magnesium alloy (they certainly are very light). When stripped, they are not shiny like aluminium, instead they are a dull grey colour. The finish of the casting is poor with many defects and they look terrible. Obviously this was the reason they were finished with the thick coating which also looks terrible when it blisters and flakes off. After I bead blasted mine from my M102 it had a silver frosty appearance which I suspect would soon turn dull grey. I don't believe the rough surface of the casting would polish very well. The silver appearance after bead blasting is what made me decide to do mine in silver engine enamel (I had also seen a picture of another forum member's valve cover finished in silver). As I mentioned earlier, I am happy with the result but not being thick like the original coating means some of the defects in the casting are still visible.

Greg
