Can anyone give tips on changing ML's spark plugs?
Hello all. I have had to replace my spark plug wires several times and was told it was due to the plugs not functioning as well as needed and that I should replace them. Is it as simple as taking them out with a wrench and replacing them?

Yes. The hard part usually is removing the plug wires, and it sounds like you've already done that, so you should do OK.

Actually, I have yet to remove the plug wires. I have done so on others but not yet on ML.

I did the plug wires. You pull the engine cover off for more clearance and I found that a gloved hand worked really well to pull them off. There was enough room for all of them and I'm a big guy. Be prepared to do some exercise when you pull the plugs. I was able to confirm that you can expect them to be siezed in their holes. I had to torque on the one I pulled the entire way out. Have some anti-sieze compound on hand to dress those new threads to prevent it from happening again.
The coil packs are labeled A and B and the valve covers have corresponding labels, so the plug wires are hard to mess up. I priced replacement MB plugs at $18 each, and have since learned that the aftermarket Bosch Platinums are just fine. |
