W126 questions--sunroof and lower cladding
Haven't had time to thoroughly go thru my "new" W126/ 300SD. ( 142,700 miles, NEW MB engine at 135,XXX miles)
Sunroof----opens electrically, but must be closed by the screw---Is there a link on removing and cleaning the sunroof and its motor? Lower body cladding---Main problem with the car is clear coat peeling; I need to do a comnplete repaint. How does the lower body cladding come off? Are the clips reuseable, or sacrificial? |

Sorry if I'm not accurate here, but I'm not where my 126 manual is...regarding your lower body cladding, do you mean the plastic trim around the bottom of the fenders and doors? If so, there is a slightly different procedure for each piece, like front fenders, front doors, and rear doors. I've changed the trim on the right front fender and removed/replaced the front right door. The removal of left and right sides is the same. Please confirm if these are the pieces and I'll check back over the weekend and post instructions from the manual, unless someone else chimes in of course.
Yes, you can re-use the clips.

don,
Yeah, thats exactly the stuff. Its the plastic along the lower part of the body--usually in a color that contrasts with the paint. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

In order to do the doors, you have to peel back a small amount of the weatherstripping on the other side of the door and there will be a small hole there. You will have to use a 1/4" drive socket, a 7mm if I remember correctly, and remove that small plastic nut. Be careful not to drop it down in the door or lose it, easily done. Then after that, unclip the top part of the paneling from the rear to front, but it will be hung on the very end. Then unclip the bottom from front to rear, and it will also be hung at the end. Then, shift the paneling to the rear to unhook it, and then back to the front. Just one thing, the paneling is very difficult to unclip, the plastic clips are very hard. Don't get too wild on it, b/c then you might bend the metal trim piece. Also, don't use a metal pry device, b/c you might scratch the paint. It's a very delicate procedure. Some sort of a plastic pry device would probably work the best. For the corner pieces, they just come off. Just give a firm tug from the bottom. Oh, and I disagree with donbryce, the clips are for the most part sacrificial. Some will come out ok, but most will break. And they are expensive once you add them up. Hope this helps. Sorry, no experience with the sunroof.

Thanks, thats exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I noticed a slight "notch" in the metal channel that holds the rubber weatherstripping around the doors--just where you described there being a screw. I never would have noticed it w/o your description. Thanks again.
