Arrow Victor Reinz Valve Stem Seals

Has anyone replaced their valve stem seals with the VICTOR REINZ brand? The cost is 1/4 of the MB OEM for me. Or should I only use OEM for this repair?

Here is a distributor link:

Here is some more info:

valve stem seals

at my shop we only use oem brand, which are made by elring, so either mercedes factory or elring sholde be fine. we have had oil burning issues with victor reinz in the past. Ray

The aftermarket parts supplier I deal with carries Elring for transmission filters, but unfortunately the valve stem seals they have are made by Victor Reinz. The reason why I asked is, because MB OEM seals cost $45.35 and I can get the Victor Reinz for wholesale at $12.00.

How about buying from fast lane, they are 14.64 for your car, unless they do not ship to canada. I changed mine 3K miles ago and they are good, I paid $21.00 at Fast Lane.

Good luck.

Arrow Viton®

According to this link:
http://skinnerbox.steaky.org/Service/W124/w124CD1/Program/Engine/103/05-2700.pdf

Mercedes recommends using Viton® valve stem seals to reduce oil consumption.
Identification:brown colored material (the OEM and Victor Reinz are brown too)

Did you remove the head to do them or did you do it with the head or heads in the car still? I want to do them on my 190E 2.3 but would rather not remove the head just for that job!

You don't have to remove the head for this job. This will give you an idea on how to perform this task easily:

viton

viton isn't a brand name of a seal, it is a component used to make the seals, elring also uses viton in their production of the seals.

You're right. I just found that out. Dupont Dow Elastomers sells the Viton® to other companies who use it in the manufacturing process.

the ones sold by phil at fastlane appear to have Viton intakes as per MB spec. My eyes are not good enough to see a brand, but I'm sure he would tell ya if you called

One thing no one's mentioned yet. Those clear plastic tubes in Fastlane's picture are to slide over the ends of the valves to allow the seals to slide over the keeper grooves without getting torn up. A little oil helps, too.

Be sure to take off the plastic slider befor re-assembling the spring retainer & keepers. Too easy to leave on. Guess how I know that.

Enjoy,

Enjoy,
The bearing area (top of the valve stem is the main culprid for tearing up new stem seal. Machinist will clean up most of the problems with the top of the valve stems but it is not machine work in the sense of quality. Mostly they de-burr the stem. It only takes one burr to cut a groovein a stem seal. The seal I bought for my 3.8 L engine came with the plastic sleeve. In the old days we used McDonald's straws. They were big enough for small block Chevy Valves.

Dan
