I made a vacuum device out of a 5-gallon Marvel Mystery Oil can and a worn-out vacuum pump. Best when the oil is warm, but is sucks it right out of that dipstick tube. When it slurps, I stop, poke it a couple times, then pull out and (important step) pour in the 8 quarts of oil. This is a 2005 E320CDI.
By the way, I bought this car with just over 100K miles, always dealer-serviced. I don't know the change intervals used but, assuming it was at or near the recommended interval and used the special Mobil1 oil, it worked because I cracked the oil pan after hitting a deer. During replacement the techs found (and showed me) and said that they had never seen a perfectly clean crankcase with no varnish staining whatsoever, in a car with anywhere near that many miles, not to mention a Diesel. So I use the recommended Mobil1 Formula M and change it when the service indicator says, using a factory filter. Also: to check the oil level device, I deliberately left one of the 8 quarts of oil out. After driving about 5 miles, the message center said "Please add one quart at the next fuel stop". Right on. "There's facts and there's feelings. Go with facts but don't completely forget the feelings; just remember they aren't all that reliable."
