Talking 722.6 ATF changed by indy

I wish to relay my experience with 722.6 ATF change by indy. Since there seems to be a lot of mystery on the forum. I was with my mechanic the whole time. He also changed the oil (Mobil1 5W40 Truck & Diesel) and axle (Mobil 1 gear oil ?) fluids, but there is no mystery there.

The car is 99 E300 turbodiesel with 95 K mi.

First he drained the torque converter. we collected the fluid and it measured ~ 1 Gal. The fluid was not too bad and no burnt smell. Actually it could have gone longer. I beleive this is the first ATF fluid change at 95 K mi. Then he drained the ATF pan and removed it. The collected fluid from the pan resulted in almost a gallon may be 0.8 gallon. The filter looked good. There were absolutely no metal particles that we could see.

Installed the filter and new pan gasket and button it up. All parts including the correct ATF I got from Phil at Fast Lane. Added 5 liters of ATF (MB ATF comes in 1 liter botlles not quarts). Cranked the engine several times, then added another liter then started the car, shifted into all gears, checked the level with the optional dipstick. Since we just added fluid the temperature should not be hot so we used the lower set of markers for 25C the upper set of markers is for 80C. It was low so added 1/2 liter then checked it and it was still low then added all of the liter so now we have added 7 liters. The level was now OK for 25C. I had made a thermocouple wire stiff enough to go through the tube down to the fluid level, It worked good it measured 26C when it reached the fluid level.

Alltogether it worked well. Afterwards the drive was the same it was shifting OK before and after, I was noticing a bit more abrupt 1 to 2 shift that was there before that did not change.

In another note, I was shocked about the level of rust under the car. It seems that all attached components except for the body were showing signs of at least surface rust. I do not think these cars will last 20-30 years like the old 240D & 300D.
