I have a 1992 500SL. About 1 week ago it started acting up. Here is what is happening...
Runs strong up to about 70-80mph if i floor it and then it cuts the acceleration as if the traction control is kicking in and slows me down to around 40-45mph and keeps me there. At this point the accelerator does not respond at all. If I press and press it just keeps me at 40-45mph, the RPM sometimes will go up, but no power. If I slow down and then accelerate again, it has lots of power but as soon as I get above a certain point it cuts the power and i'm back to 40-45mph. I've searched here and haven't found anyone with similar problems. The ASR light is not coming on. I don't know how to pull the codes (is there a write-up of how to pull the codes?) Can anyone help?? Thanks, Baktash (512) 289-9397 baktasht@yahoo.com baktasht@clearcube.com |

could it be?
Do you think it could be a clogged CAT? or would that have different symptoms?

first I would like to say welcome to the forum..
I don;t have an answer to your problem, but give it some time, and one of the many techs who frequent this forum will probably get back to you soon enough with some things to check on what the problem could be. Alon

Could be trouble with your tranny...there is a valve body controlling it and they can stick. Maybe point your tech in that area...doesn't sound like a bad cat from what you describe.
Keep us posted, I have the same tranny as your SL and hope not to have troubles with it at my mileage and age. |

I second the transmission. Have you checked the fluid level recently? Do so after engine and trans are hot... while engine is running with tranmission in Neutral or park.

Guess what it was. The spare tire was a different brand and therefore a slightly different outer diameter. It was throwing the computer off and triggering the traction control. Replaced the tire, and all was good.
