Oh, such a fun afternoon. I built the code reader and it wouldn't work. Tried switching components, still wouldn't work. Turned out that I had 2, yes TWO different, new, momentary switches that were both leaking a bit of voltage so the LED was always on no matter the switch position. Put a household toggle switch in the circuit and the code reader works like a charm. BTW, Radio Shack has a 12V LED in an assembly that is easier to use than the plain one. p/n 276-270A, $1.99

You must have the wrong LED - one without the built-in resistor. Frequently you will find misfiled/mislabeled parts at Radio Shack.

Both LEDs listed to be used in my diagram are 12v leds. I specifically put the RS part# in there for the purpose of not having someone with a few regular leds at home to just go get a sw and leads.
The 276-270 is an encased version and the -209 requires mounting.
The 276-270A mentioned in a post here is non-existant..the correct # is as stated/shown in the diagram as 276-270/12v

Also , be aware that leds are polarity sensitive.
So, pay particular attention to the pos. + sign at the LED in the diagram..

I just hit my first code warning on my 95 E300D....I switched batteries with my 85 300D and now my radio just states "code".
Okay, I now understand I have "radio code" issue and barked up the wrong tree here. good grief...now I need to find radio pulling tools since I didn't get any documents with the car.

When I connect the negative to 1 and positive to 16 all i have to do is press the switch and the led lights up. Is that what is supposed to happen? I insert the third banana plug in 8, leave it on for 15 seconds while nothing flashes and nothing is cleared.
However, I'd still like to know if I assembled the code reader correctly. Is it supposed to generate a constant glow without insertion of the third (middle) lead into either 8 or 14?
