Lowering w140 1992

In reading posts about difference between the early (92,93,94?...) w140 bodies and the later "updated" type. While I think most of the "upgrades" are not desirable (loss of door pockets, different exterior trim), I also understand that the late cars supposedly ride 1.5" (?) lower.

If this is the case, then can we easily modify the earlier cars to have the lower ride? Do we just change the front springs and re-adjust the auto rear ride height? Do the later cars handle or ride better? (My 92 500sel rides and handles great, but the lower stance would be desirable...)

TIA - (I did a "search", and didn't find the answer...)
