help with rotors

I purchased and installed brake pads for my 98 slk 230 I also purchased rotors. I took out bolt and tried to slip off, they won't slip off. I tried the steering wheel to get more space but still no luck. The cap looks lilke it is permanent... any help would be appreciated.. thank you.

Need more details in order to help. Is the caliper out of the way? When you say you took off bolt, which bolt? With wheel off and caliper off, there is an allen screw that holds caliper to hub. That also must come off.

Please give more details.

Good luck,

The caliper was off, just the part that holds the pads......and the allen bolt attached to the roter was off. the rotor was moving freely, I just couldn't pull it past the cap. i tried to move the wheel, which helped but not enouph to pull the rotor off.
do I need to take the whole rotor assembly off with the two bolts... they were hard and rusty, it didn't budge.

Yes, you will have to take the 2 bolts & the " carrier " off.
These bolts are torqued to 85 ft/lbs & have loctite on them, so you may want to apply a little heat as well.

You will probably have to remove the caliper -- two bolts on the back. Usually requires a breaker bar, 18" or longer, they are a bit stiff.

Rotors, unless changed markedly from the W124, will usually just fall off when you have the 6mm retainer screw out and tap around the edge. May not clear the bearing cap with the caliper on, I don't remember.

Last time I did this, rotors did not exactly fall off! They had been put on with copper paste plus there was some corrosion - I had to soak them with WD-40 and hammer them really hard to get them to release. Should probably have used some heat .

When replacing, I applied a very thin coat of high temperature bearing grease to the mating surfaces so as to help with future release. Hopefully so little that if it runs it will not affect the braking. So far so good after 5000+ km.

For E Class, a good article on brake job:
