C280 Fan Clutch Removal
Having a difficult time revoming the fan to get to the clutch...any suggestions? I'v read the other post with suggestion on how to remove, but the 8mm allen wrench recommended doesn't seem to fit in the center of the fan to remove. Do I need to take out the radiator to gain additional space?
My problem is that I can hold one of the fan blades and move it back and forth...is this the clutch gone bad? Hopefully, it is not the water pump? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! |

Same problem for 1995 C280 fan clutch removal.
I am having the same problem and am hoping someone can provide some additional details. I have the strap wrench and socket but still not having luck removing the fan clutch. Is the bolt "left loosey" or reverse threaded? Any tips, pics, advice, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You should be able to move the fan, but w/a slight resistence. The 4 bolts are 10mm and require an open-end wrench due to lack of clearance. Usually, disconnecting the fan shroud from the top of the radiator is sufficient to give you room you need. Try holding the v-belt to the water pump while losening the bolts; this will usually keep the pump & fan from turning.

I thought I could just remove the fan clutch via the center 8MM Allen nut. Are you saying I have to remove the four bolts that attach the clutch to the pulley? The replacement part I received in the mail just has the clutch assembly. Thank you.

Yes. After removing the fan/clutch assmbly, you can separate the clutch from the fan.
