Smile 1990 300ce scan tool

Hi. I stumbled on this fantastic site a few months ago, and this being my first post, I would like to start by saying thank you to all of you who help others. There are too many to name but if Larry Bible reads this post I sure hope he is reconsidering his decision to stop posting.
Anyway, I recently purchased a 1990 300ce and I'm having an intermittent acceleration/ stumbling problem. Not being very familiar with the 104, it almost seems like a vaccuum leak somewhere to me, but I have changed all the small bits of hose under the hood as well as two hoses under the fuel mixture control that are connected to the idle control valve that were cracked. No change.
I bought the car in Wash. DC and drove it to San Francisco averaging 24.2 mpg for the trip, so I'm thinking its can't be too far off from running right.
I would very much appreciate any hints on this issue as well as any recommendations on a scan tool that I won't have to kidnap Bill Gates to afford. Thanks in advance!
