E420 Headlight bulb question
The standard bulb for headlights says it is a HB-2, 60/55 W. I have seen new bulbs from PIIA, extreme white and it is H4, 60/55W=135/125W.
Would this work without screwing up the electrical system? I'm looking to improve brightness but don't want to ruin anything in the process. Thanks

HB2 = 9003 = H4
Different names for the same thing. |

I recently upgraded from the Sylvania Xtravision (9003XV) in my vehicle to the Osram bulbs. The XV bulbs are produced with "improved manufacturing techniques" to gain an approximate 20% increase in output. The Osram Silverstars are xenon-filled bulbs that boast 50%+ increase in output at the same wattage. The difference is noticeable at low-beam, and very noticeable at high-beam. I have not experienced anyone flashing their brights at me yet. If you properly aim the headlamps and do not constantly drive with your high-beams on (should not do that anyhow), none will be the wiser that your bulbs are not DOT-approved. -DM

I agree completely
I had purchased blue, xenon look alike bulbs for my 1995 E420, and the light output, although bluish in tone, was not great.
I installed a set of Osram silverstar bulbs, and the difference is noticeable. Brighter on low beams, and MUCH brighter on high beams. The $25 I paid was well worth it. Also - be sure to use the bubble-adjustors on your headlights to get the maximum from your bulbs. Mine needed adjustment. Troy 1995 E420 88k |
