1985 500 SEL Ign Timing

I have a grey market '85 500 SEL modified to comply with EPA rules at time of import in 1985. The timing is set at 8 deg. btdc, while the label on the camshaft cover states timing to be 16 deg. Florida no longer tests emissions. Can the timing be safely reset to factory specs for use with current 93 octane gas? Car has 96,000 miles and is driven mostly in town, with occasional road trips at 70 - 80 mph. Would resetting the timing to 16 deg. improve fuel economy?
