Question Front seats in 1985 300 TD (newbie strikes again)

Hi All:

What a wonderful site with so much guidance and help!

I have another question regarding my latest acquisition.

The spring under the drivers seat is broken in one spot causing it to lean left and is a bit uncomfortable.
The passenger side is like new.
My question is: Are the complete seat bottoms swappable?
I thought I would switch the sides, assuming the seat backs mount the same way, and repair the passenger side at my leisure. Is this posibble?

Thanks,
Ron

Yes, they are interchangable; but why go through all that trouble when you can buy a new, improved-design box spring? It would involve less work (only requiring you to remove one seat), and the end result would be much more satisfying. The passenger seat is also probably beat after 20 years. I replaced the box spring and seat pad on my old 300D and it was definitely worth it.

I think the seats are the curse of the w123's (and w124's for that matter). Its the one thing about my old 300D that I DON'T miss. Saab and Volvo were making awsome seats in the 80's, so I don't know what Mercedes was thinking.

Question

Thanks Greg: Might be the best idea. Do you know of a dealer who provides these? I see some replacement units on the web at the usual suspects, but I am not sure if these are the improved springs.
Thanks again,
Ron

GregS where did you find the 'box spring' replacement? I need to accomplish the sam on my 300SD and this info would be great.
Thanks!

You can buy replacement springs from Performance Products. I changed the springs and pads on my 500 SEL and it made a big difference.
