Gas guage jumping like a Mexican Junmping bean around 3/4 & below, why?

Anyone seen this in their 300E? When the fuel get's below 3/4 it starts jumping around erractically. Anyone know if it is the fuel level sensor? Do I have to drop the tank to but it in? Thanks!

Likely the sender in the tank getting dirty.

Try some Techron. That helped mine.

Alternative is to replace the sender, which can be done with the tank in place.

I don't know if they use the same sender but those symptoms appeared about 6 months before mine failed completely. Swapping out a new one was easy but access is easy on the SL. I ran without it for another 6 months, counting the miles, until it started making noise. Good luck!

The sender was the cause in our 190E - easy to remove after moving aside the carpeting covering the front vertical panel in the trunk. I cleaned the resistance wire carefully with a pencil eraser, clearing all debris before re-installing. Has worked for several years so far since.

Steve B- Nice! Mine had fallen apart. THe tube was loose and floating around and the wires inside were dangling.
