w124 odometer stopped - removing console

About a week ago i bought a 1988 300e with 120k miles on the odometer. I have paperwork showing the documented mileage for the car over the past 10 years or so, and the owner told me that the odometer just recently stopped working.

I'm trying to take the console off to see what's going on back there, but i don't want to break any of the retaining clips or plastic parts. Are there any tips from anyone who's taken the console off, and what the problem might be? Thanks for your help!

If you search using W124 cluster as the search term, you'll find lots of threads about removing the cluster, which is press fit into the dash. Actually there's a rubber gasket that acts as a friction band that holds it.
