W126 window went down but won't go up!
'86 560SEL , I've only had it a week it was my dads and he never used that window he only owned it for 6 months or so.
the center console switch has never worked. I'm about to take that console apart again and see if anything is burnt in there or otherwise. fuse is good, drivers window works fine. well the other day riding back home my g/f was driving, I was just lounging back in the seat and for some idiotic reason pressed the switch on the right rear door. to my surprise, the window went down! I did two more quick pushes and the window got about 3 inches open. then I tried to close it..... nothing. so the window is stuck down, not good. I taped it up with plastic, but really want to get that window up ASAP! can anyone help? if I find nothing out of the ordinary in the center console, should I take the door apart? would the window motor be able to only work in one direction? seems to me if it has power, it should be able to go up and down - unless the switch was broken and couldnt tell the motor to raise the glass. please help! |

Why not unplug the bad window switch and plug into a working window switch, at least to get the window up, then either fix the old switch or replace it!

Could also be a broken plastic piece in the sliding jaw. Seems the slider breaks on the rt rear window on 126's one most often. I though my 560 had the rt rear window broken out when I bought it, found the glass in the door when I opened it up to replace the window. The plastic had shattered away from the single rivet allowing the entire window to fall into the door.

yeah I'm going to unplug the center console switch, which I know is bad - dunno about the status of the door switch,
I'll definitely look inside the door for damage to that slider piece if I can't get the window up otherwise.... thanks!! |

Had a similiar problem with my 88TE. It turned out to be the switch (actually I had two bad switches). The rocker switch functioned in the down direction but didn't "click" when I pushed it to the up position. I pulled apart the switch and noticed the the white plastic piece(s) that hold the springs and sit on top of the ball bearings in the switch had broken (from age).
Make sure you get the correct p/n switch. Order from Phil @ FastLane. Performance products sent me a switch that looks correct but with a different # on it that blows the fuse as soon as it is inserted. EJ |

Mike,
Do you have a picture of the plastic piece that you talk about. My friend has a similar problem with his 420 and I was wondering if the pieces are the same. I do not want to take anything apart unless I know what I am getting into. My 190E also has similar problems, but one window will not go up and one will not go down. Are you referring to the gear on the regulator? |

the plastic slider is the issue. To fix requires removing the door panel, a trick in itself. If I remember, after all the screws are out it slides forward and up, also need to get into the vapor seal (plastic), be prepared to replace or repair.
You can sometimes work through a slit made by an exacto knife or similar. The original plastic piece will have a rivot that will need to be drilled out, the new piece put back. I never really liked or trust my repair so I use the window sparingly. Your window switches just need cleaned. They come apart have about 8 little ball bearings and copper rocker arms. take your time and clean everything and they will work like new. good luck |

ok here's an update and another plea for help.
I took off the whole center console and found 2 exposed wires from that right rear switch. Previously, the backlight would not come on that switch when the headlights were turned on. After wrapping up those wires, now the switch will light up, but the window will not operate up or down from the center console switch. I also tried a known good window switch, no luck either. So it seems the wiring somewhere else is hosed, or its a problem in the door/motor/slide itself. The right rear door window switch ---- hehe ---- will still lower the window! I tried that for just a millisecond just to make sure the glass would respond to *some* sort of input. So, how do I get the door panel off so I can check that wiring / switch / slide / motor ????? I really don't want to screw up the door panel trying to get it off, and I'm not an expert at interior parts like that as I always seem to break some tab that makes a panel loose or something. does anyone have a digital service manual ???? thanks in advance. i have a buyer for the car but he won't give me much with that window stuck down. That and I have to fix a broken wiper stalk, which will be for another post. I just want to sell the car! |

I use this procedure on my 84 300SD
The door panel is rather easy to remove, just do it CAREFUL and SLOWLY : Remove the two screws at the handle remove the two screws and the metal piece at the door lock pull out the the light beneath the door now the panel should be free (that is : I might have forgotten a screw or two) Now for the exciting part : The panel is pushed gently UPWARDS, dont pull out ! it usually helps to tap at the bottom of the panel, again upwards. There are plastic hooks on the doorpanel which grab the door. These are the ones that break if you are too eager. (They can be glued back on again) Try to preserve the vapor barrier |

To remove the rear door panel. 1. Unscrew and remove the plastic rod (looking/unlocking rod) 2. I do not know what this piece is called but it is located at the end of the non-movable window. There are 2 long small screws holding it located on the top. This piece has to be removed for the panel to come off. 3. Remove 3 big screws that hold the door handle 4. Disconnect the light (bottom of door) 5. Remove 1 small screw (behind the plastic cover) at the door release handle 6. Remove 2 small screws at the door latch I think all screws are now removed. Then slide the door panel UP and OUT The reinstallation is reverse. Hope this helps and attached is the sketch.

thanks for the advice folks - ok I have the door panel mostly off, my problem is there are only 2 screws accessable to remove the door handle (what you pull to close the door).
there aren't any screws around the door handle that opens the door. there is two screws right behind where the handle is, but I can't get any tool in there and I've already cracked the black plastic around the door handle. what am I missing? please help! once I get back there, I am not sure as to how I could get the window up. I have tried the left rear door switch (known good) and the window won't go up. I have tried known good center console window switches on the right rear circuit and no luck either

The screw that you have showing on your picture needs to be removed or you cannot get panel odd.
The plastic piece needs to come off before you can get to screw. By moving the inside door handle you should be able to unhook the rod that connects. After this is done then you can remove panel. Your pictures look similar to the 190E that I have. With the door panel removed you should be able to put power to window regulator by using a hot lead to check if it is working. (auto body repair shops checks them this way.) You should be able to get a replacement part for the one you cracked. MBZ usually keeps these parts in their warehouse. |
