E500 Instrument Cluster Removal

Hi all,

I just attempted to remove the instrument cluster on a 94 E500 so I can replace the rheostat. AFAIK, there is no speedometer cable to disconnect as these models have electronic speedometers. Is this correct? I was only able to pull the cluster out about 1/2" then couldn't budge it anymore. Am I missing something here or do I just need to pull harder. I guess I'm just being too careful so as not to break the plastic housing. Any tips out there? Thanks.

I'm not sure, as my 93 still has the manual cable.

Look by the pedal assembly, and you will see the cable routed there (if yours turns out to be a manual). You can free the (manual) cable there by removing it from the fixture...that will give you enough slack to pull it out enough to at least rest it on the steering column w/o disconnecting.

Btw, you DID diconnect the battery, didn't you?

G-Benz,

I did look for a cable by the brake pedal but there was none. That was the reason I searched for instrument cluster removal threads again. There was one thread that did mention that the E420/E500 have electronic speedometers. And yes I did disconnect the battery while attempting to remove the instrument cluster. Thanks for the reply.

That is correct -- the E500s have an electronic speedometer.

The cluster should just come straight out. I use a pair of hooks made from clothes hangers as cluster pullers.

BTW, you will get the best answers pertaining to this model if you post your questions to the bulletin board over at www.500ecstasy.com as that's where all of the 500E/E500 nuts hang out.

Cheers,
Gerry

Thanks Gerry. I will try to remove the cluster again tonight. I do have the instrument cluster puller. I only bought it because it comes with the radio and ignition lock? tools also.

I do post in 500ecstacy.com also although I couldn't get to the site this morning from my pc at work. I guess I should be working anyway instead of surfing the net ha-ha.

A lot of 500E/E55 owners post in the "Hot Rod" forum as well...
